How to create, edit and delete a variant group in the POS menu?

My menu has some items that require a customer’s choices to be considered and want him to select them while placing the order itself.

Variants are helpful if you want to give choices to the customers. Variants can be of three types- Single choice, Multiple choice, and optional.  We will be covering

To understand them better, let us take an example. Say, we have an item called Burger and we want to add variants to it. There are three scenarios-

Let us try and understand each one of them.

 Steps-

Step 1-  Login into your POS

Step 2-  Navigate to the ‘Menu’ section from the side menu.

Create a variant group

Step 3-  Click on the Add New button in the Variants Group section. Another screen will appear.

Single Choice Variant Group - One of the options has to be chosen by the customer.

Step 4- Fill in the variant’s name and choice type in the columns. You can also enable separate printing for the variant and assign a printer to that. For single-choice variants group min and max number of choices are by default 1.

Next, add options in the Choices sub-section.

One important thing to note is that the prices set for the options are the difference between the variant’s price and the item’s base price i.e. if this variant is added to the item burger priced RM10, then if the customer chooses a Mexican patty price RM0 nothing will be added to the base price and the cart value will be RM10. However, if he chooses another patty like a chicken patty priced at RM5 then the cart value will be RM15.

Multiple Choice Variant Group - Multiple options can be chosen by the customer.

Step 4- Fill in the variant’s name and choice type in the columns. You can also enable separate printing for the variant and assign a printer to that. For multiple-choice variants group min and max number of choices are to be defined by the staff.

In our case, the customer has to add at least one sauce to his burger and at most three i.e. all of them. Since these choices are priced at RM0, it won’t impact the cart value.

Optional Variant Group - The customer may or may not choose any option from this group. These are not mandatory choices.

Step 4- Fill in the variant’s name and choice type in the columns. You can also enable separate printing for the variant and assign a printer to that. For multiple-choice variants group min and max number of choices are to be defined by the staff.

By default minimum number of choices is implying that a customer can choose not to add anything from this group to his cart. And the staff can define maximum choices as per the requirement. Here, a customer may or may not add extra cheese to his burger.

Step 5- Click on the Save button to save the variant group and add the variant groups to their respective items, refer here to learn more about it.

This is how different variant groups are reflected in the User Application.

Edit a variant group- Can disable, hide or edit a variant group.

Step 4- To edit a variant group, click on the Variants Group text. A screen with all the variants will appear.

Step 5- If you want to change any settings of the variant group like name, variant type, max/min no. of choices, or the options and their prices, click on the Edit button.

Here, we do not have Yellow Mustard sauce in stock at our outlet so we will disable it in our variant group. To do so, we simply clicked on the green toggle in front of the Yellow Mustard category and disabled it for the rest of the day. Click on the Save button to update the changes.

Now, the yellow mustard sauce will not be visible in the user application.

Step 5- To hide a variant group, click on the eye button in front of it and it will be hidden in that order type. Now, the ‘Try Our Local Drinks’ variant will be hidden for dine-in orders only.

Step 5- Similarly, to disable a variant group click on the green toggle in front of it and set a time frame for it to be unavailable. Disabling it for one order type will disable it in others too.

Delete a variant group

Step 4- To delete a variant group, click on the delete icon in front of it and it will be deleted.
